Five Forces Analysis Definition

Five forces analysis is a model for analysing an industry's competitive environment. In all industries, the nature and rules of competition are embodied in a five forces framework (FFF): 1. The threat of new entrants, 2. The threat of substitutes, 3. The bargaining power of suppliers, 4. The bargaining power of buyers, and 5. The rivalry among the existing competitors (Porter, 1985, 1990). The combination of these forces determines industry profitability (Porter, 1985) and competition (Porter, 1980, 1990).
