Mass Production Definition

Fincham and Rhodes (2005: 675) characterise mass production in the following terms. Work organisation is based on large, mainly unskilled labour forces. A standardised product is built in massive volumes. Product design is extremely important; products are designed to be easily assembled. Production uses dedicated (i.e. specialised) machinery designed for a given product and production system. Tight control of the labour process is provided by systems of work measurement. Mass production is typified by the assembly line and Fordist approaches to the organisation of work.
