Soft Systems Methodology Definition

Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) provides a framework for the analysis and design of solutions to 'soft' systems problems (Bentley, 1997) especially in the management of organisational change. Management problem situations are ones in which the crucial need is to find an accommodation between (permanently) conflicting viewpoints and interests. SSM is a clear process through which such accommodation can be sought, having emerged as a total re-conceptualisation of systems thinking based intervention (Checkland & Haynes, 1994).
