Course overview

This course is for a mid-level manager working at operations level. They will have oversight of one or two teams, who will have their own team leaders or managers. The apprentice will have around 5 years' experience in a management role, but, to date, has had no formal training in how to lead and manage.

Course Description

What will you learn?

You will acquire all the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to complete this Level 5 Operations / Departmental Manager Apprenticeship through focussing on the following modules:

PART 1

What is leadership and management?

In the first part of the programme, you will explore your identity and aspirations as a leader. You will learn how to align your personal leadership goals with your organisation’s strategic direction, develop a comprehensive business strategy, and create a personalised development plan. This section will help you build foundational leadership and management skills through practical workshops and assessments, ensuring a clear starting point for your leadership journey.

PART 2

Delivering Operational Plans

In Part 2, you will focus on planning, delivering, and adapting operational plans to meet business objectives. You will explore the principles of leadership and management, gaining the skills necessary to implement strategies effectively within your organisation. This section also includes an exploration of HR management processes, equipping you with the tools to manage and support your team effectively.

PART 3

Becoming a Leader

In Part 3, you will develop essential leadership skills, including understanding different leadership styles, managing teams effectively, and fostering team development. You will gain practical insights into team dynamics, motivation, and performance management, ensuring you can lead with confidence. Additionally, you will be exposed to a variety of coaching models, providing you with valuable tools to support and guide your team’s growth.

Communicating Success

In the final part of the programme, you will refine your communication, relationship-building, and project management skills. You will learn to manage projects to achieve business results, ensuring alignment with organisational goals. This section also prepares you for the end-point assessment (EPA) by focusing on clear communication, stakeholder engagement, and effective project execution.

Accredited by the Chartered Management Institute, Level 5 Operations / Departmental Manager Apprenticeship curriculum is designed to connect learning to personal and company goals through a blend of theoretical and applied activities.

You need:
  • To have the right to work in the UK
  • To have lived in the UK continuously for the past 3 years
  • At least a grade of 4/C GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English
  • To have not previously studied the course content
  • To not undertake any other qualification during your apprenticeship
  • To be able to apply your learning to your role

The programme concludes with an End Point Assessment run by an independent End Point Assessment Organisation. It involves two methods of assessment, which can be delivered in any order:

1) Presentation with questions and answers
A presentation title is set by CMI based on the knowledge, skills and behaviours covered within the apprenticeship. Once the title has been set, learners have two weeks to prepare and submit a copy of the presentation, which will be delivered either via online video conferencing or face to face in 20 minutes and is followed by 30 minutes for questioning.

2) Professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence
A 60 minutes discussion of the continued professional development and portfolio completed during the programme. Evidence of this will have been submitted ahead of time.

The Level 5 Operations Manager Apprenticeship standard) is costed at £9,000.

If your organisation pays the Apprenticeship Levy tax then the full programme costs can be paid via your Apprenticeship Levy funds.

If you do not pay the Apprenticeship Levy tax and would like to increase the leadership and management capabilities in your organisation, the Government will fund 95% of the programme cost with the organisation co-investing the remaining 5% (£450).
