Using AI for Data Interpretation

Data is increasingly presented through dashboards, reports, and visual summaries to support evidence-based decision-making. While these outputs surface patterns and performance indicators, interpreting results accurately can still be challenging. This hot topic explores how AI can support the interpretation of data results and visual outputs by translating patterns and insights into clearer understanding, while retaining human judgement and accountability (Alghamdi and Al-Baity, 2022; Brath and

Using AI for Data Interpretation

AI-enabled analytics tools increasingly support the interpretation of data results by acting as an intermediary between analytical outputs and decision-making. Rather than performing analysis, these tools focus on translating results into accessible forms, such as ranked insights, natural-language explanations, and contextual summaries. This allows users to focus on understanding what results suggest and why they may matter, rather than on technical calculations or model outputs (Alghamdi and Al-Baity, 2022).

One way AI supports interpretation is by directing attention to patterns that may not be immediately apparent from metrics or visual outputs alone. Automated insight generation can identify trends, highlight meaningful comparisons, and surface anomalies, accompanied by short explanatory statements that clarify potential significance. Research shows that pairing visual outputs with AI-generated explanations reduces cognitive load and supports clearer understanding of results, particularly where users are required to interpret multiple indicators simultaneously (Brath and Hagerman, 2021).

AI also supports interpretation by helping users distinguish between changes that may warrant attention and those that are less meaningful. By ranking insights or highlighting relative contribution, AI tools can clarify which factors appear to drive observed outcomes and which have limited impact. This supports more informed sense-making and reduces the risk of overreacting to isolated metrics or visually striking but low-impact changes (Alghamdi and Al-Baity, 2022).

Conversational interaction with data further extends interpretive support. Large language models enable users to ask questions about data results in natural language and receive explanatory responses based on underlying tables, summaries, or visual outputs. This allows users to explore meaning iteratively, refine understanding, and test assumptions without engaging directly with technical queries or statistical syntax. Such interaction supports deeper interpretation by allowing users to move beyond static dashboards and engage dynamically with results (Lu et al., 2025).

Generative AI can also support interpretation through data storytelling, where outputs are accompanied by narrative explanations that connect results to context and purpose. Rather than serving as presentation devices, these narratives structure understanding by explaining relationships, sequencing insights, and framing implications. Empirical research shows that combining visual outputs with AI-generated narratives improves clarity and supports sense-making for domain experts who are responsible for acting on insights rather than producing analysis (Gunklach et al., 2025).

Despite these benefits, AI-generated interpretations must be used with care. Automated explanations reflect underlying data quality, assumptions, and system design choices, and may oversimplify complex situations or imply certainty where uncertainty exists. Effective use therefore requires AI outputs to be treated as prompts for understanding rather than definitive conclusions. Responsibility for interpreting results and deciding on action remains with the user, with AI supporting interpretation while judgement and accountability are retained (Kovari, 2024).

Technique

Graphical Statistics

Graphical statistics shape how data is explored, interpreted, and acted upon. The choice of visual and summary methods influences what patterns are noticed, how confidently conclusions are drawn, and whether decisions are supported by evidence. Effective use of graphical statistics therefore plays an important role in supporting robust analysis.

Technique

Data Transformation and Process Capability (Cp/Cpk)

Effective improvement relies on data that can be interpreted correctly and measures that reflect real risk. Data transformation supports valid interpretation when distributions are skewed or non-linear. Process capability (Cp/Cpk) then quantifies whether a stable process can meet specification limits consistently.

Technique

Forecasting and Queuing Theory

Understanding how demand, flow, and capacity change over time is essential when systems must perform under uncertainty. Forecasting and queuing theory offer ways to anticipate future patterns and examine how delays and congestion arise, helping make sense of time-dependent behaviour in complex environments.

Technique

Linear Regression

Linear regression is used to examine how variation in one or more factors is associated with changes in a continuous outcome. It supports comparison of effects across variables, analysis of uneven data, and practical application of the General Linear Model. The focus is on understanding relationships rather than prediction alone.
