The importance of theory in coaching: A lifelong journey, not just a skill

This question is understandable. Coaching is not just about acquiring a set of tools, it’s about developing a way of thinking, being, and relating to others. While practical application is essential, understanding the theoretical foundations of coaching is what sets truly transformational coaches apart.

Five things businesses can do to avoid “accidental managers”

The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) estimates that up to 2.4 million leaders and managers in Britain are “accidental managers” with no formal management or leadership training – this equates to roughly four in every five. While these managers and leaders are technically capable, the lack of formal training in soft skills and business acumen is holding back productivity, damaging workplace motivation and ultimately reducing business growth.

The Voice of a Leader

So much of great leadership comes down to successful communication. It isn’t just what you say, but how you say it. Part of what a leader must do to ensure their messages are heard is developing a laser-sharp focus on their voice and the way they speak.

New project management apprenticeship launched

Whilst KnowledgeBrief has been leading the way with our leadership and management courses, one area that was noticeably absent was that of project management. Although there were aspects of project management in all the team leader, department leader and senior leader courses there had never been a dedicated project management apprenticeship. Based on this and the desire and feedback from apprentices it was agreed in early 2024 to launch the first project manager apprenticeship.

Rainy Days and Mondays Always Get Me Down

Rainy Days and Mondays Always Get Me Down

The working week doesn't always begin on Monday morning. Increasing numbers of employees report intrusive thoughts about the upcoming week disrupting their weekend downtime, with anxiety peaking on Sunday evenings. This has become known as the 'Sunday Scaries', particularly affecting younger workers. The HSE identifies stress and anxiety as the leading cause of sick absence, with Mondays consistently recording the highest absence rates. The resulting lost productivity significantly costs UK businesses, with a recent estimate as much as £85 billion per year. Do these figures provide enough of a compelling case to take these wellbeing risks seriously and look to implement suitable workplace adjustments.

Is your apprenticeship investment paying off? Measuring the tangible and intangible returns

Progress of apprenticeship content can easily be tracked but understanding the real impact the learning is having, may be more difficult to quantify. The true value of an apprenticeship can be seen through everyday decision making, the conversations being held and behaviours displayed. By observing how people perform, how they solve problems and take responsibility, you can start to see whether the learning is being converted into real life improvements, both for the individual and across the business.

The Art of Listening – Finding the Balance between Support and Challenge in Coaching

Coaching involves a real and important tension. It’s not just about making clients comfortable, nor is it about pushing them into discomfort. It’s about creating a space where growth happens often at the edge of support and challenge. The truth many new coaches miss is this: striking that balance depends on your ability to truly and deeply listen.
